What’s familiar from the original
- The world: Auroria, a long-forgotten continent rediscovered by pioneers — set about 50 years after the original game, so you don’t need to know its story.
- Life skills: hunting, gathering, housing, farming, crafting and recipes.
- Trade: trade with other players, and “thrilling trading runs” across dangerous territory — the developers say guild fights over trade posts are an idea for later (see PvP).
- People: Creative Director Jay Lee worked on the original ArcheAge for years before leading Chronicles.
What’s different
- Action combat instead of tab targeting — skills depend on your weapon and its trait tree, and you can swap weapons. See classes and weapons.
- Channels instead of giant servers: about 100 players per channel; dungeons and story moments are instanced for you or your party of up to four.
- Opt-in PvP: Peace channels are safe; Conflict channels are where PvP happens.
- Exploration-driven progression: trait points come from bosses guarding Raeven’s Coilstones, not from grinding levels. See progression.
- Buy-to-play with a no-pay-to-win pledge. See price.
“It doesn’t feel like an MMO”
That was one of the most common reactions to the demo. The developers have said they want each player’s own adventure to come first — which is why story content and dungeons are instanced and PvP is opt-in — while the open world, trade and guild systems carry the MMO side. Early Access is where they plan to adjust this based on feedback.
